An Overview of Windows Server 2003 R2 & New Feature

Windows Server 2003 R2 was introduced by Microsoft on 6 December 2005, with the inherited features of Windows Server 2000. It was released for x86 and x64 architecture with many new features such as branch office management, storage management, server virtualization and support for UNIX based applications etc.

New Features of Windows Server 2003 R2

Branch Office Server Management

This feature provides a centralized tool to manage files and printers, includes enhanced distributed files system and more efficient WAN data replication with remote differential compression.

Identity and access management

In Windows Server 2003 R2 provides extranet single sign-on and identity federation, single sign-On and password synchronization using network information system (NIS).

Quota Management

In Windows Server 2003 R2 quota management enhanced in comparison to Server 2000. It enhanced from the volume level to folder level or group of folders level. In this OS user can specify the folder to a certain size limit.

Active Directory Federation Services

This features enables to the user to use single sign-on (SSO) technology so that user can access multiple accounts on web with a single user name and password.

Improved Interoperability with UNIX

In Windows Server 2003 R2 gives a development environment for UNIX to the user. It provides to users the base utilities, base SDK, visual studio Debugger add-ins and etc.
